Praxis Mastery Mission

Mastery Mission One:
Evidence: Confidence with Tests

Build a test library that works for you — and develop the confidence to explain what you use, why you use it and when you might need something different.

What you will walk away holding

A test library audit, clear battery rationale and report-ready test descriptors.

You don't need every test. You need the right range of options — and the professional judgement to know why you're choosing them.

Does this sound familiar?

You've got the tests. But are you completely confident you've got the right toolkit?

Most assessors don't need an enormous collection of tests. They need enough flexibility to respond intelligently to the person in front of them — and confidence in the decisions they make.

Have I actually got everything I need?
Is my favourite battery enough?
What if the emerging profile doesn't fit neatly into my usual tests?
Do I need another test — or am I simply over-testing?
Which newer tests are genuinely worth investigating?
Could I clearly justify why I chose this test for this person?
Mission One moves you away from “Which test should I buy next?” and towards: “What evidence do I need, and what is the best way of obtaining it?”

Why this matters

Your test library underpins everything else.

Good assessment isn't about putting everyone through the same familiar battery.

Your referral question, background information, observations and emerging profile should influence the evidence you gather and the tools you select.

Mission One gives you the opportunity to stand back from your everyday assessment routine and take a proper look at the toolkit you are relying on.

And no — this isn't an invitation to buy more tests.

Sometimes the answer will be to add something to your library.

Sometimes it will be to understand the tests you already own better.

And sometimes it will be to realise you are already collecting more evidence than you need.

The goal is a stronger assessment toolkit — not a bigger cupboard.

Your tangible Mission takeaway

Your Personal Assessment Toolkit Plan

At the end of Mission One, you won't simply know more about tests. You'll have completed a practical review of the resources you use in real assessments.

  • Your existing core tests and batteries
  • Areas where your library already gives you good choice
  • Potential gaps you may want to address
  • Areas of unnecessary duplication
  • Tests or resources worth investigating further
  • Priorities for future investment
  • Your rationale for your core assessment battery
  • Clearer descriptors for the tests you regularly use

What might this look like in practice?

Meet Priya.

Priya mainly assesses adults and currently relies heavily on one familiar core battery alongside a handful of supplementary tests.

She knows the battery well. It feels efficient. But she has started wondering whether she has enough flexibility when an assessment produces a more complex or unexpected profile.

During Mission One, Priya maps what her current library enables her to investigate, identifies where she already has good options, and spots the places where her choice is genuinely limited.

She considers possible alternatives, checks them against the current STEC list and relevant manuals, and works out what would actually add something useful to her practice.

She finishes with a sensible development plan — not a £2,000 shopping list.

Is this Mission for you?

Mission One is useful whether your test cupboard is sparse, overflowing, or somewhere in between.

You qualified with a particular test battery and have mostly continued using it.
You own plenty of tests but aren't entirely sure how well they complement one another.
You're moving into a different age range or assessment context.
You're reviewing your practice ahead of the 2027 transition.
You're considering investing in new tests and want to spend wisely.
You want greater confidence explaining why you selected particular measures.

You don't have to be starting from scratch. Experienced assessors may get just as much value from examining the habits and assumptions that have quietly built up over time.

The Praxis approach

I'm not going to give you a Praxis-approved test battery.

There isn't one.

The aim of this Mission is to strengthen your professional judgement so that you can look at the individual in front of you, consider the evidence you need and make a defensible decision about the best tools to use.

I'll give you frameworks, examples and questions to work through. But you will build the toolkit that fits your assessment practice.

A fair question...

“Couldn't I just look at the STEC list myself?”

Of course. And you should.

But a list of suitable tests doesn't tell you:

  • where your own library is strong or weak;
  • where you have several tests doing essentially the same job;
  • what would complement the batteries you already own;
  • what makes sense for the age groups and clients you assess;
  • or what to do when a real assessment takes an unexpected turn.
Knowing which tests exist is useful.
Knowing how and why to select them is the work of the assessor.
