Jane Angus

After her degree in business, Jane worked as an IT trainer and an account manager, then, looking for more fulfilment she trained as a teacher. Quite early on Jane knew that SEND was the area she was interested in and when the opportunity to train to become a Qualified Teacher of the Deaf arose she grabbed it with both hands! In 2010 Jane joined the Deaf Education Team in Salford and in 2015 she became the Deaf Education Team Lead which she enjoyed for 6 years.

As Jane is passionate about education and learning, she decided to extend her knowledge and trained to become a dyslexia specialist for both children and adults. Following this, Jane set up Discover Dyslexia to meet the growing need for assessments and tuition and she splits her time between working for a local authority and taking on privately commissioned work.

Jane is also an external supervisor for placements on the Deaf Education course at the University of Manchester. Her specialisms in in both deafness and dyslexia has led her to present at the annual Deaf Education Conference at the University of Manchester for the past two years and she is committed to furthering the knowledge in this field through research.

Margaret Ellwood

I am passionate about ensuring that those with specific learning differences and their families see a child’s full potential and unlock ambition.

I have worked across the state and independent sectors, within classroom and advisory services. I have delivered education and specialist support right across the 0-25 age range, which includes supporting families wrestling with the implications of a hearing loss diagnosis at birth. Mid-career, I became a fully qualified Teacher of the Deaf and, subsequently, a Specialist Teacher in Dyslexia and Specific Learning Difficulties. I have researched and developed materials for pre-school programmes, advised exam boards, and pioneered teaching programmes at the secondary school level to support aspiring musicians with hearing loss. I continue to work closely with speech and language therapists, audiologists, music therapists, and those working in the field of cochlear implants.

I currently advise schools as part of Hampshire County Council’s sensory team. I also undertake pre- and post-16 diagnostic assessments across the South of England, including the university sector.

Appreciating the challenging circumstances in the education sector, I draw on a breadth of experience to deliver informative and engaging training with a focus on practical application.
