Specialist Teacher Assessor/Trainer
Sarah Sainty
I first trained to teach people with dyslexia when I was working as an occupational therapist in a child development clinic. I had become very interested in the fact that many of the children I was seeing, for handwriting or sensory integration difficulties, were struggling with spelling too. I became a speech and language therapist about 10 years later - fascinated by the relationship between spoken and written language and the way they influence each other. One of my favourite jobs was as a speech and language therapist and Literacy Co-ordinator in a school for children with specific learning difficulties. I have worked with primary and secondary aged children, both in the UK and in other parts of the world too (India, Pakistan, The Netherlands, Italy, Spain). Most recently I was the Inclusion Co-ordinator in a trilingual school in Lisbon. I now work mainly independently, offering diagnostic SpLD assessments, speech and language therapy and support for literacy.

Speech and Language and Dyslexia: Case Studies and Recommendations
A really useful course to help distinguish speech and language and dyslexia, and the crossovers that can be seen in profiles.

Demystifying Speech and Language and Dyslexia
I have attended Sarah's other talk and heard her speak on various group presentations but this really was brilliant and helped me so much with the dilemmas I have had recently in my diagnostic assessments and now I feel so much more secure in my decisions, so thank you so much!

Appropriate
Great knowledge communicated. The course allowed me to consider the presence of DLD in a particular student who I am struggling to make progress with.

Practical, thought-provoking and really insightful
Thank you so much, I wish all my in-service CPD sessions were this useful and had so many practical takeaways/applications:-) This is an area I want to unpack more, and will be researching as a result of Sarah's presentation. I find a lot of students with secure Tier 1 vocab, secure Tier 3 vocab (even if the abstract concepts it sometimes represents are a struggle) and what's missing is the Tier 2 vocab that is never explicitly taught in the same way as Tier 1 is in primary and Tier 3 is in individual subjects at secondary. Those with language difficulties do not pick up Tier 2 language and therefore cannot use it to knit together Tier 1 and Tier 3, meaning they can't show their knowledge and understanding successfully.
